Online Worksheets
The Classroom of the Future provides a tool for creating your own online worksheets. These online worksheets are a series of questions that the computer asks the user. The user may optionally be provided with links to pages to find the answer. When the user's answer is entered, it is checked against a list of acceptable answers. If it is correct, the user is given the next question. The user gets a number of tries at the question.
It is intended that teachers will create such worksheets for their own use, or for the use of others. In order to create a worksheet, you need:
- Your list of questions.
- A list of URLs (links) for each question (i.e. http://classroom.broadcom.ie) these are optional.
- A list of acceptable answers for each question
- decide how many tries a user gets at each question
- The title of your Worksheet, and the subject area.
- A familiarity with HTML, the language of the World Wide Web. There is a beginner's guide to HTML
You should first look at the example worksheet supplied, which is 6 questions taken from another scavenger hunt - The take your children on the Internet Week Scavenger Hunt.
Once you are familiar with the interface, you can set about creating your own. You need to take the following steps:
- Gather the necessary information
- Print out this page for instructions.
- Go to the new worksheet page
- Enter the Worksheet name, Subject, and the author's name (you)
- Enter a keyword you will use to access the worksheet, should you ever need to edit it. (remember this)
- click on create
- take note of the URL for your work sheet (i.e. http://classroom.broadcom.ie/work/1.work)
- click on 'Start Adding Questions'
- For each Question:
- Enter the number of tries.
- Enter the text you want to appear before the list of links. Note: you may include html tags in your text, for instance to make something bold, you would type: This is <b>bold</b>
- Enter the list of links (if any) you want to appear with the question. These are entered with the URL on the left and the description on the right.
- Enter the text to appear after the list of links (if any). This could be something like a clue. You could leave a blank line after the links by leaving the first box for the text after the links blank and typing something in the second.
- Enter the list of answers that are acceptable. These must be matched exactly, but case insensitively. You could put '4' in one and 'four' in the other, for example.
- Click on 'Add this question to the Worksheet'. This will not actually add the question, but first brings up a window showing what the question will look like to the user (you should test the links here), and the acceptable answers.
- If this is acceptable, click on 'accept this question'. If there is something wrong, i.e. a misspelling, or a broken link, click on 'back' on your web browser, fix the mistake, and check it all again.
- You will be told that your question has been added. At this stage you can add another question.
- You can also test out what you have done so far. If you do this, either go as far through the worksheet as you need, and then use 'back' to return to add another question, or, if you get to the end, click on 'go back to where you came from' and you will be brought back to the screen with the option of adding an additional question.
- If you chose to 'Finish adding Questions', you will be taken to a screen where you can fill out a form to add your worksheet to the Classroom of the Future Resource Database.
If you don't wish to do this now, you can go back to the staffroom, but please keep note of the worksheet's URL so you can add it to the database at a later stage.
- Your worksheet is now ready to go. You can use the URL you took note of earlier to get to it, or if you go to The Online Worksheets Page (http://classroom.broadcom.ie/work) it should have been added to the the list.
- You may find you need to Edit your Worksheet.
